Food & Dining
Dining was open seating with buffet for breakfast and lunch. Now the food. You have never eaten so well. The ship provides such an excellent choice of dining venues (restaurant, sky deck grill, panorama lounge) for various meals. The dining room is well-appointed. There are round six-person tables, rectangular eight-person tables and a host of four and even two table configurations. Those are close enough that several couples could occupy them and carry on a conversation between tables if you’d lke. Wine and beer selections were served free of charge at dinner, while soft drink selections were available free of charge at both lunch and dinner. Breakfast and lunch were buffets, so one had an hour or so time period to arrive. Dinner was at a set time, almost always 7PM, so arrival was expected then. Attire was casual in the evenings, with shorts and t-shirts taboo but everything else was acceptable. Even at the two “formal” nights, perhaps 4-5 men had jackets and ties. Very laid back atmosphere. And NO assigned seating (Yay!) Servers were all very good, friendly yet professional. over all, onboard dining was fabulous.

There are freshly prepared eggs/omelets for breakfast and a carving station at lunchtime in addition to the other buffet items. Dinners were served open seating with a 5-course meal each evening. Main courses usually varied from beef, fish and a pasta or vegetarian offering along with 3 always available items - salmon, steak and chicken. Meals to be very good with very nice presentation. The wait staff varied in its efficiency depending upon who served a specific table. Alternatively a "light" breakfast and lunch are also served in the main lounge.

Choice of complimentary wine, beer or soft drinks will be included with dinner on Avalon Europe river cruises. In Europe, Asia and South America, coffee and tea are available free of charge throughout the day from "early riser" breakfast through dinner. On the Yangtze wine is included with all dinners. On the Mekong and Irrawaddy river complimentary coffee, tea, soft drinks, local beer/spirits is available throughout the day and wine is included with dinner. Avalon can cater for vegetarians and all special diets as long as it is made clear at the time of booking and also mentioned again to the cruise director on the day of embarkation; we also offer a healthy option with all buffets.

Entertainment
Educate yourself while sailing onboard Avalon Affinity by attending various lectures as well as other culturally-enriching experiences. Look forward to various onboard experiences with local chefs, entertainers, and artisans. Spend an afternoon on the Sky Deck for breathtaking scenery that you pass by along the waterways. Next, grab your beverage of choice, and mingle and unwind with like-minded travelers in the lounges and bar.

Every cruise includes two or three evenings of onboard entertainment, at least one show performed by the crew and nightly piano music. On certain cruises their may be guest speakers, local musicians performing folklore shows or classical recitals. A resident Pianist will also perform nightly. There is a selection of board game and a small library available onboard.

Staterooms
Ms Avalon Impression Panorama Suites with their vast 200 sq.feet free space, are more than 30 per cent larger than industry’s standard suites, affording guests the opportunity to wake up facing the beautiful passing scenery. In addition to the Avalon Poetry II and Avalon Illumination, the striking Avalon Impression will grace the waters of Europe’s Rhine, Main, and Danube Rivers. Like its sister ship, the Avalon Expression, the Impression features two full decks of Panorama Suites with Wall-to-Wall Panoramic Windows that transform the living space into a unique Open-Air Balcony. With 200 square feet, Panorama Suites are more than 30% larger than the industry standard, affording you the incomparable opportunity to wake each morning facing the splendid passing scenery.

Each Suite has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the European cruise experience.  From bed and bathroom positioning to storage and sound-proof insulation, Avolon provide cruisers a renewed feeling of freedom, space and comfort not found with other cruise lines.”
Each suite on all eight Suite Ships features the industry’s only Open-Air Balcony, providing travelers a combination of the largest windows available with a sliding glass door that opens wide at 7-feet, plus a spacious seating area. With a focus on bringing the beauty of Europe inside, Avalon’s Open-Air Balconies can be enjoyed any hour of the day, year round, adding considerable comfort to the overall guest experience without taking space away from the room. Inspired by design, every element of Avalon’s on board experience was crafted to entice the five senses. Some details , including flowers in each stateroom and premium L’Occitane products are subtle.  Other offerings, such as marble bathrooms, Avalon-branded deluxe bedding (Comfort Collection by AvalonSM) and the perfect balance of warm interiors and natural lighting are distinct and unexpected.

A plus of river cruising is ship size. There are only four decks, including the upper sun/sky deck, so exploring the ship is a breeze. state rooms was quite nice, just as expected, with bed facing out towards the ample three sliding door configuration, which allowed 2/3 of the room to be exposed to the outside. Bathroom was quite large for a cruise ship, with nice amenities. Water bottles were provided, daily, free of charge.

Tipping
Gratuities are not included in the price of the cruise and are entirely discretionary. If it is a wish to reward good service we recommend 3 euro per passenger per day for the cruise director and 12 euro passenger per day for the crew, which will be divided amongst all of the ships personnel. Gratuities envelopes will be left in staterooms the day before the cruise ends, and a designated box for envelopes will be in the reception area when passengers are leaving the ship. It is also customary to acknowledge good performance by a local guide with a tip of 1 euro per tour.

Fellow Passengers
American/Canadian/UK/Australians and New Zealanders. An Avalon passenger is typically near retirement age or retired. They enjoy experiencing and learning about new places and seeing new sights. They have an interest for history and culture. An Avalon passenger enjoys relaxed, quiet environments with fine food and wine on offer.

Our recommendation

If you are new to Europe, prepare to pay to use toilets, usually 50 – 70 cents (Euro). Always have some loose change on you! There are some free toilets but few and far between. Alternately, you can go to a café, order a coffee or whatever and use their facilities.
