Sailing Seniors - A Guide To Senior Cruise Savings
Sailing Seniors - A Guide To Senior Cruise Savings
Cruising is a wonderful vacation choice for seniors. Cruising for seniors is the perfect way to enjoy the best times of your life. Favorite cruise destinations for seniors include Alaska, Caribbean, Bermuda, Europe, Hawaii and Panama Canal.

Seniors can enjoy lounging by the pool on a deck chair with a good book, or a game of cards. Or you can be as active as your hearts desire with exercise classes, dancing lessons, wine tastings, singles parties, golf, tennis and a wide variety of shore excursions. Shore excursions include escorts and knowledgeable hosts. Shore excursions are usually via air-conditioned modern transportation.

You can enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the pool with a good book, an onboard lecture, bingo, a game backgammon, or become as active as your hearts desire with yoga, exercise classes, dance lessons, wine tastings, meet other singles and much more. When it comes to dining, guests can opt for a low-calorie lunch, pasta preparred at your table in the dining room or a cheeseburger and fries at the pool buffet. Dinners are five to seven course meals and often feature international specialties.

Depending on the ship selected, passengers can dress formally or dine as casual as they want to be. Deciding what features are important to you is a priority: perhaps you are single and female and would like to dance before or after dinner; then you should consider ships that feature Gentleman Hosts.

Gentleman Hosts are men over 50 who dance with the unescorted ladies. You may also be assigned to dining room tables with other single men & women traveling alone, and attend a variety of social functions aboard. Many seniors ask us "Is there a doctor on board"? The answer to that is simple....yes. Though the following information is important and should be read by all passengers before booking a cruise, especially so if one has an existing condition.

Should a guest require medical attention while aboard a cruise ship there is an Infirmary staff available to assist 24 hours a day. The Infirmary is equipped to treat minor non-emergency matters. Physicians are available to render services at a customary fee. A charge for medical services will be billed to the guest's on board account and a receipt will be provided for the guest to submit to their insurance company upon return for possible reimbursement.

The physicians on board are independent contractors and are entitled to render services at a customary fee which may vary from ship to ship based on the time of day. The basic fee does NOT include medication, tests or treatment. Choosing a cruise line that meets your desires is a priority. Are you a single and female that loves after dinner dancing? Then you should consider a ship that features Gentleman Hosts. Gentleman Hosts are men over 50 who are onboard to dance with the unescorted ladies. You may also be seated at a dining room table with other single men & women who are sailing alone. There are plenty of onboard functions and activities to enjoy as well.

CRUISE LINES WITH GENTLEMEN HOSTS:
Crystal Cruises, Cunard Seabourn Line, Holland America Line, Silversea

FAVORITE CRUISES FOR SENIORS: If your preference is to sail on a cruise line that has no or few children onboard the then your choice should be one of the following lines: Crystal Cruises: The majority of passengers sailing aboard the luxurious Harmony and Symphony are between 50 & 70 years old. 4-6 social hosts are on every sailing. Enjoy elegant Mozart Tea in The Palm and reflect the past as the wait staff serves you in period costumes of velvet and lace. Lecturers include Walter Cronkite and Debbie Reynolds. Sail with top chefs Jacques Pepin and Andre Soltner durint the Wine & Food Festival sailing.

Crystal offers exotic itineraries throughout the world including a world cruise. A very desirable cruise line with up to 80 different ambassador hosts. 4 -8 ambassador hosts are on each cruise.

Cunard/Seabourn Cruise Line: Popular with seniors, especially so on the entire voyage of the World Cruise. The Queen Elizabeth 2 a favorite with her old world style offers Transatlantic crossings.

The QE2 has 10 world cruise segments. Cunard's Caronia is a favorite amongst the European seniors. Enjoy harpists and elegant teas as you step back in time to the era of the luxury steamship. Dance hosts are on every sailing.

The Seabourn Sun and her gracious touches appeal to the mature adult. The remaining ships of the Seabourn ultra-deluxe fleet are yacht-like vessels featuring the finest in food and service at sea. Age range aboard the Seabourn Pride, Spirit, and Legend is 45 to 80.

Silversea Cruises: The yacht-like ships of this ultra-deluxe line appeal to a well-heeled, well-traveled clientele. A quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Life aboard consists of trivia, bridge, culinary demonstrations and wine tastings. Programs may include photographers from National Geographic and some voyages feature chefs from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.

Holland America Cruise Line: has a long-standing history of catering to both seniors as well as single passengers. Many activities -- such as culinary demonstrations, wine- tasting's and enrichment programs -- don't require partners. Team events like trivia or "Name That Tune" give solo passengers an opportunity to be part of a group. We have also found the piano bars on Holland America ships to be particularly engaging for senior passengers, offering a show tunes- and standards-heavy repertoire. It's not unusual to find show lounge performers hanging out between or after show times and joining the passengers in sing-along's. The camaraderie makes these venues great for those who are traveling alone and seeking an entertaining, convivial and companionable lounge for after-dinner drinks.

Holland America's Single Partners Program, a single-share plan, guarantees space at the double-occupancy rate whether or not a same-sex roommate can be located. Lastly, on voyages of more than 30 nights, Holland America provides gentleman dance hosts for single ladies. Single Partners Program Each Holland America ship hosts a Solo Travelers party for singles to meet each other early during their cruise.

Solo travelers enjoy enriching activities with mixers, cocktail parties, games and more. In total, there are more than 40 activities to meet other singles including: exercise classes, enriching lectures (select departures), line dance class, wine tasting and cooking demonstrations, Team Trivia contests, the daily quiz, sports challenges and more.

Many of the Single Partner Program guests have become fast friends and some even book future Holland America cruises together. Guests can count on Holland America Line’s gracious staff and crew to create a shipboard atmosphere of camaraderie making it easy and fun to meet other solo travelers. On most cruises of 30 days or longer, onboard Social Hosts welcome single women guests to dinner and dancing. By advance request, special effort will be made to seat singles with other singles at dinner. Single guests who agree to share a stateroom with another nonsmoking guest of the same sex pay only the per-person, double occupancy rate. (If a partner is not available, the guest will cruise solo at the agreed-upon double-occupancy fare.)

Single guests who prefer not to share a stateroom may book a double stateroom for 150 to 200 percent of the double occupancy fare, depending on the cruise and stateroom category. This program applies to selected staterooms on all ships in the fleet. The Single Partner Program is not available on Grand Cruises (Grand World Voyage, South America & Antarctic Voyage and Mediterranean & North Africa Voyage).

SELECTING A SENIOR CRUISE:

When choosing ships, the important thing to keep in mind is that they are not all the same. Selecting the right ship is particularly important to seniors. The mature adult of 70 or older usually prefer a small to midsize ship as it limits the amount of walking required. The younger, active seniors loves the small as well as the midsize ships, yet there are a select group that prefer the megaships of lines such as Royal Caribbean . These ships offer a wealth of activity and dining options. The itinerary is just as important as the ship. Alaska & Mediterranean cruises offer spectacular scenery and are favorites with seniors.
